Expert Vein Care in San Diego — Medical and Cosmetic

At La Jolla Vein & Vascular, veins are our specialty.

Our physician-led medical and cosmetic vein clinics provide comprehensive care for patients who want healthier legs, better-looking legs—or both. Our vein specialists evaluate and treat everything from chronic venous insufficiency and symptomatic varicose veins to small cosmetic spider veins.

As a top-rated San Diego vein clinic serving patients since 2010, we understand that not every patient needs the same type of appointment. To make scheduling easier and help you get to the right specialist from the beginning, we have streamlined our process into two pathways:

Medical Vein Clinic — for varicose veins, extensive spider veins, leg symptoms, or suspected underlying venous reflux disease.

Cosmetic Vein Clinic — for smaller spider veins and cosmetic concerns without symptoms or signs of underlying vein disease.

Both clinics are physician-led, with care provided by doctors experienced in vein treatment.

What Can Our Vein Specialists Help With?

Our goal is not simply to make veins disappear. We look at the bigger picture: why the veins developed, whether an underlying circulation problem is contributing, and which treatment is most appropriate for your individual needs.

Depending on your evaluation, treatment may help:

  • Improve the cosmetic appearance of your legs
  • Remove or reduce unsightly varicose veins
  • Treat spider veins
  • Identify and treat underlying venous reflux or venous insufficiency
  • Reduce the likelihood of recurrent veins when underlying reflux is contributing
  • Improve symptoms such as aching, heaviness, fatigue, swelling and cramping
  • Develop a long-term plan for healthier, better-looking legs

The first step is determining whether your concern is primarily medical, cosmetic, or a combination of both.

Varicose Veins, Extensive Spider Veins or Leg Symptoms? Start Here.

If you have large varicose veins, extensive spider veins, or symptoms involving your legs, we recommend starting with a medical vein evaluation.

Symptoms associated with venous insufficiency may include:

  • Leg aching or discomfort
  • Heaviness
  • Leg fatigue
  • Swelling
  • Night cramps
  • Restless legs
  • Varicose veins
  • Extensive spider veins
  • Skin discoloration or changes around the ankles
  • Symptoms that become worse after prolonged standing or later in the day

Visible veins can sometimes be the surface manifestation of a deeper problem called venous reflux, or chronic venous insufficiency.

Why Do I Need a Vein Ultrasound?

When medically indicated under our clinical protocol, patients with significant varicose veins, extensive spider veins, or associated symptoms undergo a venous duplex ultrasound to evaluate the veins beneath the skin.

The ultrasound allows our team to assess blood flow and determine whether the one-way valves inside the leg veins are functioning properly.

When these valves do not close effectively, blood can flow backward and pool in the legs. This is called venous reflux and can contribute to varicose veins, swelling, aching, heaviness and other symptoms.

Identifying underlying reflux is important because treating only the veins visible on the surface may not adequately address the source of the problem.

Treat the Cause. Then Treat What You See.

Our approach is comprehensive.

When underlying venous reflux is present, we can develop a treatment plan that addresses the abnormal veins contributing to the problem before—or in conjunction with—treating the visible varicose and spider veins.

The goal is to improve symptoms, address underlying disease when present, improve appearance, and reduce recurrence when possible.

Does the Medical Vein Clinic Accept Insurance?

Yes.

La Jolla Vein & Vascular accepts many insurance plans for medically necessary vein evaluation and treatment. Coverage and authorization requirements vary by insurance carrier and individual plan.

Cosmetic Spider Vein Clinic

Small Spider Veins Without Symptoms? Start Here.

If your primary concern is a small area of spider veins and you do not have significant varicose veins or symptoms suggesting underlying venous disease, you may be able to skip the medical vein evaluation and schedule directly with our Cosmetic Spider Vein Clinic.

Our cosmetic clinic is also physician-led, so your treatment begins with an appropriate medical history, examination and individualized treatment plan.

The Cosmetic Spider Vein Clinic is best suited for patients who:

  • Have a relatively small number of spider veins
  • Are primarily concerned about appearance
  • Do not have large or bulging varicose veins
  • Do not have significant leg aching, heaviness or fatigue
  • Do not have unexplained leg swelling
  • Do not have night cramps or restless-leg symptoms suggestive of underlying venous disease
  • Want physician-directed cosmetic spider vein treatment

Does the Cosmetic Vein Clinic Accept Insurance?

No.

The Cosmetic Spider Vein Clinic is self-pay and does not accept or bill insurance.

If your physician determines that your veins may be related to underlying venous insufficiency or require medical evaluation, you may be referred to our Medical Vein Clinic for the appropriate diagnostic workup.

Will My Spider Veins Be Treated at My First Appointment?

Usually, treatment is not performed during the initial consultation.

Even when your concern is cosmetic, proper vein treatment begins with an assessment—not simply an injection.

Your physician will review your medical history, examine the pattern and extent of your veins, determine whether there are signs that warrant additional medical evaluation, discuss your goals and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

Once your evaluation is complete, your treatment session can be scheduled.

Not Sure Which Vein Clinic to Choose?

A simple rule of thumb can help:

Large varicose veins, extensive spider veins or leg symptoms → Medical Vein Clinic

If you experience aching, heaviness, fatigue, swelling, night cramps, restless legs or prominent varicose veins, start with a medical evaluation so we can assess for underlying venous reflux.

Minor spider veins without symptoms → Cosmetic Spider Vein Clinic

If you have a small area of spider veins that bothers you cosmetically and otherwise have no significant vein-related symptoms, the Cosmetic Spider Vein Clinic may be the most direct option.

Comprehensive Vein Care Starts With the Right Evaluation

At La Jolla Vein & Vascular, we believe successful vein treatment starts by understanding what is happening beneath the surface.

Sometimes the goal is purely cosmetic. Sometimes visible veins are a sign of underlying venous reflux. And sometimes patients need both medical and cosmetic treatment to achieve the outcome they want.

Our streamlined medical and cosmetic vein clinics help ensure you receive the right evaluation, the right treatment pathway and physician-led vein care from the beginning.
